The Good News | Daily Devotion

By Dr. Alysa VanderWeerd

And I saw another angel flying through the sky, carrying the eternal Good News to proclaim to the people who belong to this world—to every nation, tribe, language, and people. “Fear God,” he shouted. “Give glory to him. For the time has come when he will sit as judge. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.”

Revelation 14:6-7 NLT

Next, John shares that he sees an angel flying through the heavens proclaiming the gospel. Can you imagine this sight?

We know angels are God’s messengers with a specific mission, fulfilling the will of God the Father – Psalm 104:4, but up until now, the only words Scripture has shared that they have spoken are specific messages to specific individuals not messages to a mass audience; for instance the angels that spoke to Abraham and Lot in Genesis 18-19, the angel that spoke to Daniel in Daniel 10, the angel that spoke to Zechariah in Luke 1, the angel that spoke to Mary in Luke 1 and the angel that delivered Peter from prison in Acts 12.

We know when it comes to God’s mysterious plan – His plan detailing salvation for both the Jews and the Gentiles, He chose to use the church to display His wisdom in its rich variety to the unseen spiritual realm and in the heavenly places. Thus, He chose to use His church with Jesus Christ as the head to display His wisdom to the angels. God chose to use Christians filled with the Holy Spirit, using their spiritual giftings, including evangelists, pastors, teachers, apostles, prophets, leaders, givers, encouragers, servants, and those who show mercy to others to display His wisdom to the angels.

Moreover, the psalmist says in Psalm 91, if you make the LORD your refuge, He orders His angels to protect you wherever you go – Psalm 91:9, 11. Thus, the angels are watching the wisdom of God in all of us as we obey God, and they know how important we are to God as He commands them to protect us.

Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1:12 NLT, “They (the prophets) were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.”

Thus, from the time Christ ascended and the church was born, the angels have been watching the gospel being preached and they rejoice in heaven when one sinner repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior – Luke 15:10.

They eagerly watch.

Now we know when Jesus shared His Olivet discourse, He said in Matthew 24:14 NLT, “And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.”

Right here, we see the fruition of Jesus Christ’s prophetic word. An angel is sent.

This angel is the chosen vessel housing the treasure of the gospel. For all we know, this angel’s life’s work up until this point is watching evangelists through the years share the gospel – this angel’s privilege, ensures every nation, tribe, language, and people, thus, the whole world, hears the Good News. Not one language on earth will be overlooked when it comes to hearing the Good News. Every language will hear and understand. Everyone is given opportunity to turn away from sin and turn toward Jesus Christ, receiving His grace and forgiveness.

What is interesting, is in sharing the Good News, the angel exhorts the people to “fear God,” to show reverence and awe for the Creator who holds the world and time in His hands. The angel continues saying, “Give glory to him. For the time has come when he will sit and judge. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.”

Have no other god, but the One true King who can save you from eternal death.

Worship God, not mankind.

Will you pray with me?

Abba, thank You for the privileges we have right now to share Your love with those around us, please fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we can share the Good News with those who need to hear it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
